In the summer of 1944, a group of "colored" members of the Seattle Central church (Boylston and East Olive Streets) came together at a meeting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred G. Hurd at 21st and East John Streets to discuss their non-involvement other than actually attending services at Central each Sabbath and Wednesday evening. This meeting was held with much prayer and thought asking, God for guidance and  direction. As a result of this 'gathering', it was recommended that Mr. Hurd and Mr. Nelson contact the officers of the Washington Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, to discuss with them the desire of the members of to form their own 'company' for the time being with an established church as a future goal.

Their hopes and dreams were answered by God's will with the purchase of their first edifice on the corner of 23rd Avenue and East Spruce Streets. The Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist Church, pictured here, was purchased by the Washington Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in 1946.

The first to pastor Shiloh church was Elder William Cleveland. Later followed Elder J. H. Lawrence, who purchased another church because the congregation outgrew the facilities of the Shiloh Church. The church was renamed "The Spruce Street Seventh-day Adventist Church" because of its location, 24th and East Spruce Street.
During the years that followed, this African-American Adventist church in the Northwest. was pastored by Donald Crowder, Ned A. Lindsay, David G. Rand, Emerson Miller, Perry Jennings, Roscoe Howard and Robert L. Whitaker.

Because of its continued growth, there was a need to form a second church. During the year of Perry Jennings, a core of 56 members were willing to become charter members of the Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Church, which became Seattle's second African-American Adventist Church with a current membership of over 242.

Despite the forming of a second church, The Spruce Street Church continued to grow. So in the autumn of 1986, through dedicated sacrifice of its members, a new facility was built and named the Emerald City Community Seventh-day Adventist Church currently housing a membership of over 600. This congregation has been led by by Senior Pastors Robert L. Whitaker, Roscoe Howard, III, and Hector Mouzon. EuGene Lewis has been the Senior Pastor since 1994.

In 1992, The Emerald City Church and The Maranatha Church, enthusiastically supported a successful evangelistic crusade led by Elder C.D. Brooks at the Seattle Convention Center. This effort led to the formation of the Breath of Life Seventh-day Adventist Church, a third African-American church in Greater Seattle Metropolitan area. Its membership now exceeds 190 as it prepares to embark on its own building program.
